VISCERAL JOURNALISM · THE BANNED COURSE
They banned my course. So I’m teaching it here.
I taught Visceral Journalism exactly once. About three hundred students came. The room was too small, so we moved into the Great Hall, which the dean’s wife considered her living room. She arrived with the entire teaching staff and every security guard in the building. The course was suspended by unanimous decision. The students signed a petition. The faculty acknowledged receipt and did nothing.
The faculty cancelled the course. The world kept supplying material.
The syllabus has four disciplines, and they are the only four things a journalist needs: revolt, irreverence, a point of view, and a vocation for the absurd. A new lesson every day on TikTok and Instagram. The full lessons are here.
